She reports no new symptoms. The examination is remarkable only for the finding of an irregular heart rate. Electrocardiographic testing reveals atrial fibrillation at an average rate of 75 beats per minute. She has no history of arrhythmia, coronary disease, valvular disease, diabetes, alcohol abuse, transient ischemic attack, or stroke. For the past several months, she has exercised on a treadmill without difficulty, although she notes that the machine does not always measure her heart rate. What should her physician advise?

Uncertainty in Patients Newly Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation
1. Background and significance Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac rhythm disturbance encountered in clinical practice. The overall prevalence of atrial fibrillation in the United States is 0.4% of the general population (Coumel, 1996) and nearly 9% in elderly patients (Jung & Luderitz, 1998). Furthermore, the number of hospital admissions for atrial fibrillation is more th...
متن کاملAn Automated Clinical Alert System for Newly-Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation
OBJECTIVE Clinical decision support systems that notify providers of abnormal test results have produced mixed results. We sought to develop, implement, and evaluate the impact of a computer-based clinical alert system intended to improve atrial fibrillation stroke prophylaxis, and identify reasons providers do not implement a guideline-concordant response. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted ...
متن کاملNewly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation Is an Independent Factor for Future Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events
OBJECTIVES This study aims to investigate the impact of newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF) on future major adverse cardiac events (MACE). AF is the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with several other cardiovascular (CV) events. Little is known about whether newly diagnosed AF is an independent factor for future MACE, especially in patients without such a history. ...
متن کاملCardiovascular complications in newly diagnosed rheumatic heart disease patients at Mulago Hospital, Uganda
BACKGROUND Complications of rheumatic heart disease are associated with severe morbidity and mortality in developing countries where the disease prevalence remains high. Due to lack of screening services, many patients present late, with severe valve disease. In Uganda, the disease and its complications are still not well studied. OBJECTIVE To profile and describe cardiovascular complications...
متن کاملClinical Prediction Model for Time in Therapeutic Range While on Warfarin in Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation
BACKGROUND Though warfarin has historically been the primary oral anticoagulant for stroke prevention in newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF), several new direct oral anticoagulants may be preferred when anticoagulation control with warfarin is expected to be poor. This study developed a prediction model for time in therapeutic range (TTR) among newly diagnosed AF patients on newly initiate...

Response to Letter Regarding Article, “Preexisting Heart Disease Underlies Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation After Acute Ischemic Stroke” We appreciate the interest of Doğanay et al in our article in which we examined the presence of preexisting heart disease in patients with newly detected atrial fibrillation (AF) after stroke. They refer to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system afte...
